Resolution is only one part of readable detail
4K video contains more pixels than 2K, which can help when cropping a well-exposed frame. Lens focus, sensor size, shutter speed, compression and windshield condition can matter just as much. A poorly tuned 4K camera may not capture a moving plate better than a strong 2K model.
Motion and darkness are difficult
At night, a camera needs enough light without overexposing headlights and reflective plates. Higher resolution on a small sensor can create noise, while slow shutter speeds blur motion. Review representative footage for day, night, rain and highway speed from the exact model and firmware.
Bitrate controls retained detail
Compression reduces file size by discarding information. Two cameras with the same resolution can record very different detail at different bitrates. Higher bitrate improves complex scenes but fills cards faster and creates more heat.
4K increases storage demand
Estimate hours retained using the combined bitrate of all channels. Loop recording overwrites the oldest ordinary files, while protected event files may accumulate separately. Use only memory-card types and capacities approved by the camera maker, commonly high-endurance cards.

- Review actual moving footage, not still samples.
- Check resolution with all channels enabled.
- Compare bitrate and codec.
- Assess night exposure and dynamic range.
- Calculate retained hours on approved storage.
- Check heat limits and warranty.
