Choose around the complete mowing session
Battery and gas walk-behind mowers can both handle routine residential lawns. Battery models start easily, avoid on-site exhaust and require less engine maintenance. Gas models refuel quickly and may suit long, dense or irregular mowing where charging access is limited.
Battery performance depends on the pack
Voltage alone does not state stored energy. Compare included battery watt-hours, number of packs, charge time and whether the mower draws from them sequentially or together. Tall wet grass, self-propel use, mulching and low cutting height reduce runtime. A shared tool platform can add value if the batteries support other equipment.
Gas performance depends on maintenance
Gas engines require correct fuel, oil, filters, spark-plug service and seasonal storage. Stale fuel and neglected oil cause reliability problems. Compare engine displacement and torque only with the mower's deck, blade and drive system; one headline engine number does not predict cut quality.
Noise and storage differ
Battery mowers are quieter but still produce blade noise and require hearing guidance from the manual. Some fold for vertical storage when specifically designed to do so. Gas models must only be stored in approved orientations and never operated in enclosed areas because of carbon monoxide.

- Estimate actual mowing time and difficult grass conditions.
- Compare included battery energy and recharge time.
- Price fuel or replacement batteries over ownership.
- Check self-propel system and ready-to-mow weight.
- Plan maintenance and winter storage.
- Confirm local noise and emissions requirements.
