A cordless vacuum's headline runtime usually reflects a low-power mode and may be measured with a non-motorized attachment. A powered floor head, carpet resistance and higher suction mode can reduce operating time substantially. Before comparing two models, find the runtime for the configuration you will actually use.
Power mode changes both pickup and time
Low or eco mode stretches the battery and may be enough for hard floors and light debris. Standard or automatic modes balance pickup and endurance. Boost mode is designed for short, difficult areas rather than an entire home. A useful vacuum is not necessarily the one with the longest maximum runtime; it is the one that finishes your cleaning route at an effective setting.
Floor heads consume power
A motorized brush roll adds electrical load. Thick carpet can also increase resistance and cause an automatic machine to raise power. Compare manufacturer figures that include the main floor head, and note whether a claimed duration applies only to a handheld configuration.
Battery design affects flexibility
A removable pack can be charged separately and replaced when it ages. Some systems support a second pack for uninterrupted cleaning, while others require the battery to cool before charging. An integrated battery can make the machine feel streamlined but may be less convenient to replace. Check whether replacement packs are available, what they cost and whether the warranty treats the battery separately.
Estimate from your cleaning route
Time how long you actually vacuum, excluding furniture moving and other pauses. Divide the job into hard floors, carpet, stairs and spot cleaning, then consider which mode each area needs. If your active cleaning time is close to a model's published standard-mode figure, allow margin for battery aging and demanding surfaces.
Charging matters between sessions
Compare full charge time and dock behavior, not just runtime. A machine that charges slowly may be fine for once-a-day cleaning but inconvenient for repeated jobs. Follow the manual on storage temperature and charging; lithium-ion batteries age faster under excessive heat and should not be charged when outside the stated temperature range.
