Electric vs. propane portable heaters

Compare power, heat output, operating location, runtime and safety requirements before choosing a heater.

Operating location comes first

An electric resistance heater produces no combustion exhaust at the device but requires a suitable electrical circuit. A propane heater burns fuel and can produce carbon monoxide, water vapor and other combustion products. Use fuel-burning models only in the locations and ventilation conditions explicitly approved by their manufacturer.

Electric heaters are circuit-limited

Many plug-in heaters approach the continuous capacity of a typical household branch circuit. They should be plugged directly into a wall outlet when the manual requires it, not into power strips or ordinary extension cords. Check for a warm plug or outlet and stop use if either overheats.

Propane provides portable high output

Propane models can deliver much more heat where grid power is unavailable. Runtime depends on tank size, heat setting and conditions. Cylinders, regulators and hoses must be approved, leak-checked and kept in the positions and locations specified. “Indoor safe” marketing does not override ventilation, clearance or sleeping restrictions in the manual.

Compare total operating needs

Include fuel or electricity cost, storage, refill access, circuit availability, noise from fans and moisture added by unvented combustion. Safety shutoffs such as tip-over, overheat and low-oxygen systems are backups, not permission to ignore placement or supervision.

Never use an outdoor-only or unvented combustion heater in a tent, vehicle, bedroom or enclosed space unless the exact manual explicitly permits that use and all ventilation requirements are met.
