Travel is not the same as stock capacity
A router's X, Y and Z work envelope describes commanded travel, but clamps, probe blocks, tool length and spindle geometry reduce usable space. The frame footprint is larger still. Verify the manufacturer's diagrams for maximum stock and cutting area.
Map recurring parts first
Measure the products, signs, fixtures or instrument parts you expect to make repeatedly. Oversized panels can sometimes be tiled through the machine, but that requires accurate repositioning and room beyond the frame. If tiling is central to the plan, check front-to-back pass-through and alignment features.
Z clearance disappears quickly
Usable Z must accommodate stock, spoilboard, fixture, cutter stick-out and safe retract height. A tall gantry does not guarantee deep cutting if rigidity and tool length become limiting. Rotary axes consume additional height and may need a dedicated mounting position.
Larger machines need infrastructure
Include the stand, computer, controller, dust collection and service access. A moving-gantry machine stays mostly within its frame; other layouts may move the bed or stock. Measure doors and the delivery path before ordering.
