How to size a jump starter

Match a jump pack to engine type, displacement, climate and vehicle access instead of guessing from peak amps.

Use the manufacturer's engine rating

Jump-pack makers commonly publish maximum gasoline and diesel engine sizes. Diesel engines generally require more cranking current for a given displacement. Select a pack rated for at least the actual engine, then allow margin for cold climate and aging batteries.

Verify system voltage

Most passenger vehicles use 12V systems, while some commercial equipment uses 24V or other arrangements. A 12V pack must not be connected to an incompatible system. Hybrid and electric vehicles often have a small low-voltage battery but require model-specific access and procedures.

Climate affects practical size

Cold oil, reduced battery output and a cold jump pack make winter starts harder. Store the pack within its specified temperature range and warm it only by a manufacturer-approved method. Never place it on an engine, heater or other hot surface.

Access and cables matter

Some batteries are under seats or panels and use remote jump posts. Check clamp opening, cable reach and required connection point. A compact pack that cannot reach the approved terminals is not useful, even if its current rating is high.
