Optical output is not wall power
Laser listings may mention module input, electrical consumption or optical output. Optical watts reach the workpiece; wall watts do not describe beam power. Even optical power is only one factor alongside wavelength, focus, spot shape, motion speed and air assist.
Material claims need conditions
A statement that a laser can cut a thickness may assume a specific material grade, dry flat stock, a clean lens, strong air assist and multiple slow passes. Ask whether the result is a clean production cut or a maximum demonstration. Plywood glue, wood density and pigment can change performance.
More power can improve throughput
Higher usable output may cut at greater speed or require fewer passes, but can reduce fine-detail flexibility if the beam spot grows or minimum power control is poor. Engraving photographs and cutting thick stock demand different performance.
Air assist and exhaust are part of the result
Air at the cut can clear smoke, cool the kerf and reduce flame. Exhaust removes smoke from the enclosure and helps keep optics clean. Neither makes an unsafe material acceptable. Some plastics produce corrosive or highly toxic gases and must never be laser processed.
Comparison checklist
- Identify optical output and wavelength.
- Read cut claims with speed, passes and air settings.
- Check beam spot and low-power control for engraving.
- Confirm approved materials and maximum thickness.
- Include air assist, exhaust and maintenance.
