Plasma cutter air requirements

Match compressor airflow, pressure and air quality to a plasma cutter for reliable starts and longer consumable life.

The cutter and compressor are one system

Most air-plasma cutters need a continuous supply at a stated pressure and flow. A compressor's maximum PSI or tank gallons alone does not show whether it can keep up. Compare the cutter's required CFM at pressure with the compressor's delivered CFM at that pressure.

Allow for duty cycle and pressure drop

A small tank can provide a short burst, then the pump must replenish it. Long cuts require sustained airflow. Regulators, filters, narrow fittings and long hoses cause pressure drop, so pressure at the cutter while flowing matters more than static gauge pressure.

Clean, dry air protects the process

Water, oil and particles destabilize the arc and shorten consumable life. Drain the compressor tank, maintain separators and use the filtration specified by the cutter manufacturer. Humid climates and long runs may need more moisture control than a basic bowl filter provides.

Built-in compressors trade capacity for convenience

Some compact cutters include an air supply, reducing setup for light mobile work. Confirm their thickness, duty-cycle and environmental limits; the integrated compressor may not match an external shop-air system for sustained heavy cutting.
