Duty cycle describes time at a stated output
Welder duty cycle is usually the percentage of a ten-minute period that the machine can weld at a specified amperage under stated conditions before it must cool. A 40% rating at 200A commonly means four minutes of welding followed by six minutes of cooling. The amperage attached to the percentage is essential.
One machine has more than one effective duty cycle
At lower output, the same welder can usually run longer; at higher output, less time. Product pages sometimes feature the most favorable percentage or a rating at a lower amperage than the machine's maximum. Compare models at a similar output and the same input voltage.
Test standards and temperature matter
Manufacturers may rate equipment under different standards and ambient temperatures. Cooling performance in a hot shop or direct sun can differ from a controlled test. Dust-blocked vents, long undersized extension cords and low supply voltage can add stress. Look for the conditions stated in the manual rather than comparing percentages in isolation.
Workflow determines what you need
Tack welding and short repair beads allow natural cooling pauses, so a modest duty cycle may never interrupt the work. Long production welds, high-deposition processes and repeated heavy joints demand more continuous capacity. Include time for fit-up, repositioning, cleaning and consumable changes when estimating the real arc-on percentage.
Thermal protection is not a production plan
Many welders stop output when internal temperature becomes too high. The protection light prevents some damage, but repeatedly running to shutdown wastes time and may indicate the machine is undersized, obstructed or operating outside specifications. Leave vents clear and follow the specified cooling period.

- Compare ratings at the same input voltage.
- Check the test standard and ambient temperature.
- Estimate actual arc-on time for your workflow.
- Consider duty cycle at the process and material thickness used most.
